The Domestic Shorthair

The Domestic ShorthairWe talk a lot about different breeds of cats, but today we want to talk about the most popular type of cat, the Domestic Shorthair. A Domestic Shorthair is a shorthaired cat which does not have a pedigree or belong to a recognized cat breed and is often confused with the American Shorthair, which is a recognized breed. The difference between the two is that American Shorthairs are selectively bred to have the classic Domestic Shorthair traits. While the Domestic Shorthair is not selectively bred, they can have the traits of many other breeds. It is estimated that 95 percent of cats are Domestic Shorthairs. Most people, at one time or another, have owned one, and probably everyone that reads this have at least one.

The first cats were brought to the United States by the pilgrims. The Domestic Shorthair came about as the result of the interbreeding of these cats to other cat breeds. As a result of hundreds of years of interbreeding, the Domestic Shorthair’s traits cannot be easily named. Quite simply, the Domestic Shorthair comes in every color from pure white to calico, every shape from Cobby to Oriental, every size, although they usually weigh between 10 to 20 pounds, and every temperament, from inquisitive and affectionate, to aloof and crabby.

The Domestic Shorthair is a perfect cat for everyone. As stated earlier, it can be a bit of a crap shoot as to personality, and how good they are with children or other animals, especially if you get them as kittens, but they are generally good with both. They are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. If you’re looking for a cat we encourage you to think about adopting an adult cat. The shelters are full of loving cats in need of a good home.
