Why Do We Love Cats?

So why do we love our cats, I mean they can be a real pain in the butt sometimes. For instance tonight, Oliver, my little red tabby Scottish Fold, was sitting on our coffee table eating a napkin, yes, a napkin. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know. Just like I don’t know why he likes to claw our mattress at night while we’re trying to sleep. Or why he has to run from one end of the house to the other like a maniac at six o’clock in the morning. Beats me!

Then there’s Zephyr our charcoal grey and white adopted girl who’s missing half of her left ear. Now Zephie is one of the coolest cats ever, but she does have a few strange habits that leave me scratching my head. She loves to lick plastic bags, for hours on end even, if we’d let her. She’s also claimed the bathroom as her own. All during the day and most of the night as well, she lives in there. Want privacy? Forget about it because it just isn’t going to happen. She’ll bang on that door if you manage to make it inside without her. Overly obnoxious yet friendly, our Zephie is, so let’s just leave it at that.

And the worst of the lot is Kitty, our pleasantly plump thirteen-year-old calico. She is a holy terror. She scratches everything but the cat scratcher’s that we have all over the house. Because of her we have tape on every wooden surface in the house. When she’s not scratching any and everything, she’s beating on the other animals in the house. Even the ferret won’t go near her, and he attacks everything. She once smacked him so hard that I swear she knocked him out (true story). She drives us to point of wanting to punt her across the street like a football most times.

Every cat owner can relate to some or all of what I’ve written here. I don’t know what is worse, the scratching, the fighting, the keeping me awake at night. Or maybe it’s the way that they look at you so innocently when you catch them doing something bad. All the while letting you know that you can never really control them. I guess that’s what we love the most about them. A cat interacts with you on it’s own terms. They put up with us as much as we put up with them.
