There are different kinds of arthritis. The most common form is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. What this disease does is to cause the cartilage layer on the surface of the joint to deteriorate. Although it may develop as a result to an injury to the joint surface it mostly occurs as a result of aging.
The most common sign of arthritis is lameness that worsens during cold damp weather or following strenuous activity. Upon getting up after sleeping the cat may also appear stiff.
Hip dysplasia is not common among cats. It refers to a shallow ball and socket hip joint, which results in degenerative problems.
Polyarthritis is an inflammatory disease that may be connected to one or more viral infections.
The treatment for arthritis will depend on the type, severity and any underlying causes. Surgery may be required. Since this disease is aggravated by cold and damp conditions, keeping your cat warm will help to lessen her pain.
Both aspirin and Tylenol which are commonly used for treating arthritis in humans, are unfortunately toxic to cats. Consult with your veterinarian for possible medication if your cat is uncomfortable.
By preventing your older cat from becoming obese will also lessen the pain by reducing the weight load on her joints as well.
