Causes Of Stress In Cats

Cats can quickly become stressed whenever even the slightest change occurs within their environment. They tend to be creatures of habit and are at their most highest level of comfort with a daily routine. So it’s not surprising that when that routine changes, no matter how small and trivial it may seem, it just may be enough to trigger stress.

The same as humans, there are many reasons why a cat can become stressed. These include: environmental, physical and emotional.

Environmental stress triggers for a cat may include:

  • Having too many pets in the household
  • Moving to a new homestead
  • A change in their daily routine, such as overnight guests or holidays
  • Being confined indoors if used to going out
  • Undue confinement
  • Movement of their litter box

Stress factors that affect the physical health of a cat may include:

  • Being ill
  • Being obese
  • Having a surgical procedure
  • A physical trauma
  • Parasites such as worms or fleas

Cats may show their anxiety in many ways. Some of the common indicators include:

  • Excessive grooming or not grooming themselves at all
  • Aggression
  • Not using the litter box
  • Not eating
  • Excessive vocalization
  • Chewing on objects
  • Hiding
  • Withdrawing
  • Uncharacteristic fearfulness or timidity

The solution to your cats stress will depend mainly on the source of her anxiety. The first step one should take is to try to find the cause of the cats stress and if it is at all possible to do so, remove it.

Keep in mind however that some stresses such as the addition or separation of new family members will “disappear” on their own as the cat gets used to them.

It’s recommended that you have your cat examined by your vet to look for any signs of illness.
