Laryngitis occurs when there is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the cats larynx. The signs of laryngitis include loss of voice and hoarseness. Excessive meowing and a chronic cough are usually the most common causes of laryngitis due to the fact that they both cause strain on the vocal cord.

Other causes of laryngitis may include throat infections, tonsillitis, pneumonia, inhalant allergies, tracheo-bronchitis, and in rare cases, tumors of the throat. Mucous frequently accumulates in the larynx due to the fact that the lining of the larynx is not coated with cilia, therefore exaggerated throat clearing is needed to help dislodge it. It is this exaggerated throat clearing that causes further irritation to the cats larynx and lowers her resistance to infection.

Treatment: If the laryngitis is caused by excessive meowing, removing the cause of the cat’s distress or anxiety will usually help alleviate the problem. If the laryngitis is caused by chronic coughing, veterinary attention should be sought out to find and eliminate the cause of the cat’s prolonged cough.
