Leash Training Cats

Training your cat to walk on a leash is a healthy alternative to letting her outdoors on her own where it isn’t safe. And contrary to what some may believe, this isn’t at all that difficult a task to accomplish either. In fact, there are certain pedigree breeds, such as the Siamese, that usually respond to this training fairly well. However, be prepared, as most cats, while accepting the leash, will tend to wander. You may also want to get into the habit of walking your cat before her meals each day, so that this becomes the reward on returning home.

So let’s get started. To begin, your cat should be fitted with a light harness, preferably one with elastic inserts, and training should begin by letting the leash trail on the ground. You should then hold the leash and gradually introduce the idea of control, starting with a short period and increasing the length of time each day. Your kitty’s first walks should be in quiet surroundings, and then once she gets used to being walked, you can start to introduce her to streets and traffic if you wish. However, do not ever expect your cat ever to walk and heel as obediently as a dog!
